I have a theatre degree so there are perks to living in the cities (as Minneapolis is I think the second-largest theatre scene in the country after New York) however, we moved to a Minnesota suburb this last August and I'm loving it! It's quieter and we are renting a bigger apartment for the same amount of space. However, parking is always a mess and it was harder when the pandemic shut down a lot of the city benefits. I did love being able to walk places but, safety was a concern, especially during this past summer (we never had to leave but, our rental was on a more residential street). When I moved back to Minnesota after college with my FH (then boyfriend) we moved to Northeast Minneapolis. The car rides kind of sucked but it wasn't the end of the world. I'm from a rural town in Minnesota (about 45 minutes from the Twin Cities) and my mom would take us to the cities all the time to experience the museums and theatre shows (she was a big theatre person so we went often). But now my parents have me worried that I'll be isolated and friendless.ĭoes anyone have any experiences or advice they could share? I don't mind going to the same bar and the same restaurant. I love to cook and some recipes take days, so I am longing for a bigger kitchen and a bigger fridge. I was really confident in this decision because I liked the idea of having more space. My family says I will be so bored and have no friends because childless people don't live in the suburbs. It is within driving distance of the city and of some tourist attractions if you drive further from the city. The place we are considering is not walkable and doesn't have a variety of restaurants and bars or other fun things. My family thinks I will be isolated and miserable in the suburbs. But we did go to maybe 3 shows a year, which I loved. I didn't use many of the city amenities like the gym or the arts opportunities because I didn't have much time or money. I'm very close to friends (though like I saidn many have left the city, and many have left the state altogether). I enjoy walking to work and the grocery store. When things were normal, FH and I went out to dinner once or twice a week. I know as the economy recovers that this will change, but it's hard to ignore the way it is now. I loved this city for a long time, but I'm just not loving it right now. My neighborhood is often the site of protests (that have become riots over the past year, I had to flee my home twice). My neighborhood has become more dangerous as a result of businesses closing and failing and people leaving. Our city is shut down right now and is honestly a miserable place to be. We thought it would be cool to move to a townhouse in the suburbs on a train line so we could get a bigger place with a doable commute. FH now permanently works from home, and I still work in an office in the city. Even though our places are small and not in great shape, we spend a TON on rent. I live in a studio and FH lives with a roommate in a 2 bedroom. I currently live in a large, major US city. I told my family today that FH and I were planning to move to the suburbs after our wedding and my family freaked out, so I wanted to get other perspectives. As with most concert tapes of any length, you'll get a few numbers you can skip but whatever your tastes, you'll get more than enough good rock 'n roll here. With Paul McCartney, Linda McCartney, Hamish Stuart, Robbie McIntosh. Earlier in the concert, you see old film clips of the Beatles accompanying some of the songs, and that was nice to see. Paul McCartneys Get Back: Directed by Richard Lester. For me, the finale was the best on the tape with the title song "Get Back," along with songs off the "Abbey Road," album, all of which were some of my favorite Beatles tunes. The Orioles announced that legendary singer-songwriter Paul McCartney will perform the second-ever major concert at Camden Yards on Sunday, June 12, as part of his 2022 GOT BACK tour. I didn't see her do much but it's sad to see her now knowing she died at such a young age. He even added fireworks to one of the numbers! Like all good performers, McCartney has an excellent band backing him up, particularly a guitarist whose name I don't know but the guy looked like actor James Caan. Paul McCartney’s current Got Back concert tour may have nothing to do with a similarly titled Sir Mix-a-Lot song, but the legendary Beatle likes big shows and he cannot lie. I couldn't help wondering how much Paul paid just to put on these concerts. Paul and his group perform many of the old Beatles songs, along with his solo efforts after the famous band had broken up. Footage is off several stops along the way on his big World Tour around 1990. RT BeatlesEarth: Today in 1969, Paul McCartney composed The Beatles next 1 single, 'Get Back'. The first reviews and reactions seem to confirm that. This is a very good rock video with solid presentations by Paul McCartney and his band. Considering this was the documentary that caused Paul McCartney to change his own perception of the band’s split, and John Lennon’s son, Julian Lennon, to say that watching it was a life changing experience for him, it was always going to be pretty fascinating. Then Monte Calvario fell during that night. With the conquest of Monte Sabotino and Monte San Michele, the previously strong Austro-Hungarian defensive line around Gorizia rapidly disintegrated. In the absence of reserve forces (which had been deployed to Mount Sabotino), that counter failed. The Italian Infantry succeeded quickly to reach the summit while the Austro-Hungarian soldiers retreated waiting for a later counterattack. Simultaneously the attack on Monte San Michele also commenced. In under one hour, supported by heavy artillery, the Italian infantry reached the peak. In the afternoon Cadorna ordered the 45th division to attack Monte Sabotino. Borojevic asked for reinforcements but was denied. The bombardment at Gorizia was extremely heavy and effective. The Austro-Hungarian forces had to retreat on the line east of Gorizia (Mount Škabrijel), leaving the heavily damaged town to the Italians. In the Battle of Doberdò, the Italians, after bloody hand-to-hand combat, managed to conquer the main transport road leading from the coast town of Duino to Gorizia, thus securing their advance to Gorizia from the south. The offensive was concentrated in two zones: the hilly area west of the Soča (Isonzo) river near Gorizia and the westernmost edge of the Karst Plateau near Doberdò del Lago. On 6 August the offensive was launched against Gorizia. Ĭadorna also made good use of railroads to quickly shift troops from Trentino back to the Isonzo line for this offensive against the weakened Austro-Hungarian defenses. Moreover, this battle would start with an advantage because the Italians had already succeeded in advancing towards the top of Monte Sabotino another height (which overlooks the Isonzo valley and is key to the control of the city) above Gorizia and Italian sappers had built several tunnels behind the emplacements of the Austro-Hungarian troops there. The bombardment would be followed by ground action to obtain control of the left bank of the Isonzo. They planned a heavy bombardment in a very restricted zone between Monte Calvario and Monte San Michele – two heights overlooking the city. Italian Chief-of-Staff Luigi Cadorna turned his attention (along with that of Prince Emanuele Filiberto, Duke of Aosta – Commander of the Italian Third Army) to the Isonzo front and particularly, the city of Gorizia. The Sixth Battle of the Isonzo, better known as the Battle of Gorizia, was the most successful Italian offensive along the Soča (Isonzo) River during World War I.įranz Conrad von Hötzendorf had reduced the Austro-Hungarian forces along the Soča (Isonzo) front to reinforce his Trentino Offensive and also to assist with the defense of the Russian Brusilov Offensive then taking place on the eastern front. 2nd Piave River ( Taking of the Col Moschin). This feature records all of the actions the players make during an indefinite period of time and stores it into memory to be repeated at a later time. The Macro Feature is a useful tool to add a bit more of a reliable way for you to farm items in auto-mode. By using the Multi-Instance Manager, you can stay confident that your game is always running, even if you’re AFK on one or more instances. Players can choose between running a completely different game or running a similar one on a different instance so that they’ll have access to things like Multi-Instance Rerolling. The Multi-Instance Function allows players to open a secondary BlueStacks instance that can run a separate game to the one you’re currently playing. While you’re waiting for the stage to be relevant enough to go manual, you might as well play another game on the side without the need for shuffling between tabs. Game modes like the Endless Mode allow players to run the game in auto-mode as they climb through the stages with their characters that are way too overpowered for the level. The Multi-Instance Function is a great way to play some other great games on Android if you’re playing certain game modes in Contra Returns. Otherwise, you’d have to sacrifice precious milliseconds on switching from an attack to an ability that might cost you the match, especially in PvP mode. By combining your keyboard for movement, skill activation, and weapon changing with your mouse for firing and aiming, you can control the game more smoothly. The BlueStacks Controls Editor Function allows players to map out their keyboard buttons as command prompts onto the screen to emulate the touch screen controls. With the excitement, though, comes frustration, because the game’s mobile design makes it difficult to maximize the controls unless you lay your phone on a flat surface and use your other fingers aside from your thumbs. Contra Returns stays true to the original concept by inheriting the style of gameplay that gets people so excited about the gameplay experience. The run-and-gun genre is one of the most vanilla video game mechanics out there, but it’s also notorious for being so difficult. Save yourself the trouble of trying to find the best way to play this on your smartphone by making the switch to BlueStacks where you can enjoy some features that will help you overcome these hurdles. However, with so many things to do from moving, shooting, and using abilities, doing it all with just two thumbs might not be the best way to go about playing this game. Useful Features When Playing Contra Returns on BlueStacksĬontra Returns is an action-packed game that requires some quick reflexes and mastery over the controls. CirceĬirce (pronounced sir-see) was a sorcerer – daughter of Helios, god of the sun. Often symbolized by owls and olive trees, Athena is a great name for a well-rounded baby girl. She was considered to be the protectress of Athens, thus her name. She's also known for turning Arachne into a spider. She's best known for her spectacular birth, which, legend tells, involved her leaping out of Zeus's head, fully armed. AthenaĪthena is the goddess of wisdom, the arts (spinning and weaving specifically), and warfare. Artemis Fowl, the fantasy novel series, was recently adapted to film. Her name may come from the Greek word arktos, meaning "bear." She preferred the company of animals, and is said to have been born fully grown enough to help deliver her twin brother, Apollo. Greek mythology baby girl names ArtemisĪrtemis is a goddess of the moon, the hunt, and a protectress of the wilderness - the Greek equivalent to the Roman goddess Diana. Zeus makes numerous appearances in Homer's Iliad, as well as on more than a few hipster baby name lists. This powerful and literally lofty name is made all the more appealing by its one syllable with decisive zip. Zeus ruled the sky from his perch on Mount Olympus and controlled the weather, wielding thunderbolts as his weapon of choice. Zeus is most renowned as the highest of the high Greek mythological gods. A common Scandinavian name, this name is commonly spelled Torr in both Norwegian and Swedish. It derives from an Indo-European word that means "thunder." In Icelandic lore, it is said that when the god Thor dies, the earth is covered in water and then raises up again, green and fertile – much like the coming of springtime. Thor is the name of an Old Norse god of lightning, thunder, and storms. Osiris is also the name of several DC comics characters – and a skateboarding footwear company! Osiris Eldridge, American professional basketball player, is a contemporary bearer of this stately name. He's also considered to be god and judge of the underworld and resurrection. In Eyptian mythology, Osiris is the god of fertility and agriculture. Osiris means "mighty eye" in several translations from the Egyptian hieroglyphics. In the Old Norse language, Óðinn means "inspiration," "rage," and "frenzy." Backstreet Boy Nick Carter has a son named Odin, and it's also, interestingly, the name of a Swedish icebreaker ship. According to Norse mythology, Oden was constantly questing for more knowledge and power, often through magic. Oden (and its common variation Odin) comes from a Scandinavian god of wisdom and magic. Despite this name's seeming obscurity, it has been recently used widely throughout southern Europe and in the United States. Their romantic narrative has been alluded to extensively in literature and the arts. While not a god, Leander features prominently in a mythical love story that ends tragically – although Leander and his true love, Hero, a priestess of Aphrodite, end up together in eternity. The name Kana may also originate from the Japanese word of the same spelling, which means "powerful." This may be why he was considered the god of procreation, dawn, sun, and sky. Kana allegedly traveled to the edge of the underworld and returned the stolen sun. Kana is a Maui demigod of Pacific legend. The name, like Erasmus, comes from the Greek eran, which means "to love." You can't get much closer to a loving christening than naming your baby boy after a god that is the personification of love. Fittingly enough, Atlas also means "to endure." ErosĮros is one of the original gods, known as the god of love in Greek mythology and the son of Aphrodite (his Roman iteration is Cupid). The world maps we all used before Google came along are called Atlas maps, in honor of this very god, and the Greek derivation of the Atlantic Ocean is the Sea of Atlas. AtlasĪtlas was a primordial Titan (pre-Olympian) god of astronomy who was forced by the god Zeus to eternally hold the sky on his shoulders. Some sources list this name as a variation of Aaron, which means "high mountain." Either way, Arun is a unique name that's fitting for a bright baby boy. In Indian mythology, Arun (also sometimes spelled Aruna) is the chariot driver for Surya, the sun god. Arun, a gorgeous, summer-inspired name, aptly means "sun," or the reddish glow from it, and is a popular given name for boys in India. Now you can access Danger Dash from your PC. Here's how to download and install Danger Dash on your PC Find an Android Emulator While Walter Sharp had the faces of his arches cut fairly accurately, using mortar on all of the other angles meant that the amount of stone cutting required besides the basic quarrying was low. This meant that rectangular stones could be used to make the arches. Walter Sharp’s work-around to this was to make the angles with mortar. While, due to the nature of limestone, rectangular stones are readily manufactured, making a stone the right shape for an arch usually requires time and effort with a chisel. Wedge shaped stones, however, are not readily obtained like large brick blocks are. To build an arch, wedge-shaped stones are required. Building walls with stones shaped like oversized bricks was all simple enough, but building the arches was another story. These large blocks of stone were easily stacked, being laid into a bed of mortar with the aid of a hand operated crane. Since the stones were limestone, they could be cut very simply into massive, brick-like blocks in this fashion. Granted, the spandrel walls of the bridges were pretty simple to build the stones were usually quarried out of hillsides with feathers-and-wedges. To be sure, these local farmers often had little stone masonry training, but they were shown what to do, and with what success needs only to be determined by looking at Walter Sharp’s bridges. These structures were built with a degree of pride, often by the very people who would use them the most. This practice kept his costs down and made his bridges rather popular projects locally. Rather than hire a team of professional masons, Walter Sharp hired local people - usually farmers - to build his bridges. One factor that played into Walter Sharp’s competitive bridge prices was the fact that he used local labor. The Secret to Walter Sharp’s Success: Local Labor And it would appear that other builders of Cowley’s bridges more or less adapted Sharp’s methods. Walter Sharp was responsible for most (though not all) of the famous Cowley County stone arch bridges, including this one over Timber Creek near Floral. Stone arch bridges could be fantastically expensive (as an example, the famous Clements Bridge in Chase County, Kansas, was triple the cost of the largest stone arch bridge in the state - the Dunkard Mill Bridge, which Walter Sharp built.) However, whereas some stone arch bridges were quite expensive, Walter Sharp’s pricing proved to be but slightly more expensive than the cost of a steel bridge, and his stone bridges lasted much longer with much less maintenance than a steel bridge could. The Cowley commissioners were apparently already aware of the permanence of stone arch bridges, but did not know of anyone who could build them at a cost they could afford. Cowley County needed permanent bridges at affordable costs, and Walter Sharp provided them. While in Kansas Walter Sharp was already well known in Marion, Chase, Greenwood, and Butler counties, it was in Cowley County where he really rose to fame. And, unlike bridges built by other builders, Walter Sharp’s bridges rarely failed - surviving time and floods much better than wooden or even iron truss bridges did. He quickly rose to prominence, as his highly competitive pricing allowed him to win numerous contracts. Walter Sharp seemingly appeared out of nowhere early on in Kansas’s years of stone arch bridge building. While primarily building in Kansas, he also built several stone arch bridges in other places, such as New Mexico. Perhaps one of the most well-known individual stone arch bridge builders is Walter Sharp. |
